Caribbean Resort Almost Paradise

This trip to the Westin Resort in St. John came quite close to being called a trip to paradise. Let's see what was missing.

It's not the threat of tropical storm Chris. After all, the Heavenly Bed, Bath, and relaxing atmosphere of the rooms and the lush green vegetation would have made up for that. People pay hundreds, thousands even, of dollars to enjoy this place.

I did like the workout facilities and the kid's club and shop idea. The water and weather were heavenly, as usual. But it was difficult to find real vegetarian menus anywhere.

You would expect in a time like this when obesity, hich cholesterol, and other lifestyle conditions are at epidemic proportions that places that provide the physical setting conducive to good healthy living would also encourage the leaner, healthier look through diet as well.

When are we going to see more businesses put their money where people's health is, rather than enticing people to put their mouths where the money is? The answer to this may be; when more of us wake up to the real cause of much of the illnesses that are killing us.

Let's hope it will be more of a paradise when I go back to the Virgin Islands.

Island vegetable salad

From the previous post you may deduce that I am watching the stormy weather unfold in the Virgin Islands. The adverse weather seems to shut down business here in St. John (it seems), hence it's pointless for me to be hoping to find vegetarian food.

Supermarkets (food shops) are closed for the day. The boats that regularly sail to St. Thomas have suspended their services earlier than usual today because of the weather. So my hunger led me to a deli near the hotel.

I have made an enjoyable dinner out of an island vegetable salad, wheat bread, soy cheese, and cashews. It was enjoyable and that will definitely pass for dinner. My efforts to keep it healthy have paid off.

Vegan Visiting VI

What do you do when you're on a diet and you're on vacation or are away from home? Do you carry your own food? Or, do you relax your preferences and just go with what you can find?

Last time I traveled to the Caribbean on a work assignment, I returned home with tell-tale signs in my stomach. I could not find anything vegan to go with the sunny St. John, USVI weather. I had so much gas, I believe I could really float head up.

This time around the Virgin Islands skies are painted gray by the passing of tropical storm Chris. So I have double discomfort. It's raining and most people only know where to find chicken, beef, and sea food. Any vegetarian restaurant on St. John? I'm going to have to find out - even if I have to go in the rain.
